Free tax advice
The following organisations offer free tax advice.
HM Revenue & Customs
HM Revenue & Customs will:
- answer specific tax questions
- provide various leaflets at their enquiry centres.
To discuss your own tax affairs, you must provide them with:
- your tax reference number, and/or
- your National Insurance number.
Enquiry centres are part of HM Revenue & Customs. If you have a dispute with HM Revenue & Customs, they cannot be expected to act impartially. They will not offer advice regarding tax planning opportunities, e.g. pension planning
Citizens Advice Bureau
The CAB offers a wide range of free independent advice across the UK. Most advisers have basic training taxation and can offer help with issues such as personal allowance entitlement and completing some tax return sections.
Technical advice given by the CAB will be limited, although they may be able to help you find a local accountant or tax adviser.

TaxAid
TaxAid is a registered charity that offers free tax and debt advice to individuals. Advice from qualified tax professionals, solicitors, and former HM Revenue & Customs inspectors is available to those who cannot afford to pay professional fees.
They assist with tax returns, assessments, coding notices, simple business accounts, and a range of personal and small business tax problems (including difficulties in settling tax liabilities). Advisers will recommend possible solutions to your situation, but you do not need to take their advice. They may offer to enter in to negotiations on your behalf if complications arise.
