The Low Incomes Tax Reform Group (LITRG)
John Andrews, a former president of the Chartered Institute of Taxation, set up the Low Incomes Tax Reform Group (LITRG). Its purpose, as described on its website, is to make the tax system easier and fairer for people on low incomes.
What are they doing?
The LITRG have identified a number of low-income groups in the community who they are targeting for help. These include:
- Older people
Pensioners aged 60 and over. - Low income workers
People trying to sustain themselves in work who may regularly move between being employed, self-employed and unemployed and likely to be involved in claiming tax credits. - Students
Young people trying to achieve an educational award whilst receiving minimal support from the State.
LITRG try to persuade the Government to simplify tax laws for these groups and press for easier and clearer processes operated by HM Revenue & Customs.
The LITRG website contains a lot of helpful information for the three groups above at www.litrg.org.uk.
The LITRG has published various submissions, press releases and reports.
